Pin Up 05/02/13 - You Only Live Twice 1967

The focus of the case study is based on the film "you only live twice" 1967. It was the fifth series in james bond films. The scope of the analysis is centered on the villian hideout volcano crater. The set was designed by Ken adam to mimic the never found fictional place described in the original novel.

You Only Live Twice (1967) Film_Maxwell Render Updates


Render time : 9 hrs ( latest update )

Some emitters that I applied started to come through but a few still not working. I also have a problem with render size, this render used default render size of maxwell which is the biggest already. When I tried to do A3 with 300 dpi and 200 dpi the maxwell render started to crash.


Render time : 4hrs 30mins

Still the emitter did not come through with the down light at the ceiling. Will update more when it works !.

Weekly Update 2_You Only Live Twice

Diagrammatic Representation of Machines, People and Camera angles

The sequential movements of the machines are represented by varying degree of color opacity. From the most faded represents the starting point and the most intensity represents the ending point.

Camera angles : represent by 3D cone of visions generated in Rhino and exported for vectorize in illustrator. The use of lowercase alphabet and uppercase alphabet represent camera position and its target ( a - A ) a = camera position while, A= camera target trajectory. Then, what camera sees represent by image from the film mapped out according to each camera angle cone of visions. Here, the these images started to unfolds the set design environments. It describes what camera sees as well as a specific atmospheric qualities
 of each shot.

Diagram Layout




Here is what I plan to layout my diagrams, as mentioned during the tutorial it will be read in a clock wise fashion. The bounding boxes are to scale and in the actual layout it will be more elaborated. This is only layout done for main drawings for scaling purpose.

The paper size is 84.1 x 125 cm

Week 2 (25/01/2013) Update

Week 1 (25/01/2013) Update

Below is the first version of the choreography diagram of the film (You Onlu Live Twice) sequences. The objective for these diagrams is to illustrate the kinetic aspects of machines used in these sequences of the film including, the sliding crater, sliding heliport, sliding rocket gantry, rocket launcher and monorail system around the set perimeter. It's also describes each sequence "action command" (it's typical in these sequences that the actors' performances were dictated by "action command" sent from the control room). These "action commands" then act as a activator for actors to initiate movements, perform certain actions and activate certain machine.



Master Layout

The master layout shows how the governing layout of the entire diagrams would look like. In this case, the sequential diagrams (below) will be placed around the circle ( in dotted line) centered by the general diagram explaining basic possible movements and placement of each machines that move. Then, the following sequential diagrams that contain information about each sequence specific camera angles will be on the outer ring of the circle and it will be read in a clock wise manner, sequentially according to how the film sequences were told in the movie.



These sequential diagrams contain specific information about each film sequence from the "action command" dictating each sequence followed by how the machines are activated and moved then the camera angles and sequences in which this were shot. To represent time 2 gradient color coding system are used, one for the moving objects and the other for the camera angle.

Sequence : Blodfeld's Volcano Lair

This is an update on my progress with the 3D model of the Blofeld's Volcano Lair set design by Ken Adam. The 3d model illustrates primary kinetic constructions that appeared in this sequence of the movie. It includes, Retractable Roof Crater, Helipad, Shuttle launch pad and fully functioned monorail.

Case Study : You Only Live Twice (1967)
Production Designer : Sir Ken Adam
Set : Blofeld's VOlcano Lair
Location : Real footage from Japan + Set Construction at Pinewood Studio UK

The set (erected at Pinewood Studios) featured a command room, usable helicopter pad, full-scale Intruder rocket (which could launch with the help of a hidden crane), a huge retractable "crater lake" opening and a working monorail system!



Week 0 Update Part 2

Week 1 (18/01/2013)

This is a diagrammatic sketch of " The Adventures of Tintin (2011)" film set. It explains the filming techniques of motion capture type fim which rely on mo-cop we suit with markers on it in which the actor/performer would wear. A specifically designed studio consisted of ceiling mounted cameras studio wil work with the mo-cop wet suit of the actors and try to map of the movement. In this study, It focused on a simple sequence when tintin walk into the room holding the ship that he just bought and bring it to the table. The diagram describes how different technicians crew work together with the actor to try to capture movement, camera angles, sound and animating props.

Week 0 (15/01/13)

First week we were asked to bring in samples of types of case studies we'd be interested in doing. These are my options which at the end I chose to focus on film industry. Film industry is really a fascinating industry that involves a complex and highly intrigate system of choreography  in term of both the actors performance as well as the camerawork. These two factors work in a symbiosis relationship and will serve as my starting point for this research.
